Glowing velvet drapes
pulled up high, dazzling drama
unfolds in the sky –
A shimmering spectacle
of luminous dancing lights!

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights, is a splendid natural phenomenon seen around the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres. The brilliant light show is caused by collisions between electrically charged particles released from the sun that enter the earth’s atmosphere and atmospheric gases such as oxygen and nitrogen.
A Tanka is a Japanese poem consisting of 31 syllables in 5 lines, with 5 syllables in the first and third lines and 7 in the rest.
